Entergy Paying For Polling Against Kennedy?
Monday, April 21, 2008
News reports today indicate that a recent poll by Southern Media & Opinion Research (SMOR) which showed Mary Landrieu with a 12 point lead may have in fact been paid for by Entergy.
Most polling in the Senate race shows that it is indeed quite close, with Landrieu having the slimmest of leads. In fact, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman (DSCC) Charles Schumer recently acknowledged that Louisiana is a "legitimate pickup opportunity" for the GOP.
As those who follow the Capitol closely realize - Entergy has been desperately lobbying the State Bond Commission for approval of a scheme that would result in the taxpayers signing a promissory note for up to a billion dollars in borrowing. THE DEAD PELICAN has been told that State Treasurer John Kennedy has refused to go along with this scheme, and has asked Entergy some very uncomfortable questions. The Entergy executives have been very upset at Kennedy's refusal to go along, and have been lobbying furiously to get their deal done, THE DEAD PELICAN has learned.
Some say that it would come as no surprise to learn that Entergy, who has used SMOR in the past, paid for a survey designed to make Treasurer Kennedy look bad. Of course, it didn't even work, as the poll showed the incumbent Senator only at 50% - which some view as a very perilous position for any incumbent to be in.
