JINDAL ISSUES STATEMENT ON CAP-AND-TRADE

Thursday, September 24, 2009, 09:22 PM

Readers of THE DEAD PELICAN have been asking: what is Governor Bobby Jindal's position on cap-and-trade?

Some doubts about Jindal's position arose earlier in the week, after some comments made by Jindal advisor Garret Graves in the Lafayette newspaper. Graves told the Lafayette Advertiser that Louisiana, scene of one of the biggest environmental reconstruction projects in U.S. history, could become a major player in emerging cap-and-trade markets by selling "carbon credits" tied to the restoration of its Mississippi River delta. "We can tap that market to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars without making any modifications to our projects whatsoever," Graves told the Lafayette Advertiser.

Thre nature of Graves remark has many wondering if Governor Jindal supports cap-and-trade legislation.

The Advertiser described graves as "Jindal's top adviser on the coast and levees."

Since then, Moon Griffon has been discussing the issue on his statewide talk radio show for the last few days, and wondering: just where does Bobby Jindal stand on cap-and-trade?

Uncertain of what Graves meant, we pondered the question over at Rogers' Rants, our companion web site (see it here). Our recommendation? Call the governor and ask for clarification.

We have now received the following statement from Governor Jindal's press secretary:

"Governor Jindal has made it clear he believes that the House passed cap and trade bill punishes the American energy industry and that's the last thing we need to do when we are trying to become more energy independent. The legislation will make it harder to create new manufacturing jobs in the US, and the Governor opposes it."

- Kyle Plotkin, Press Secretary, Office of Governor Jindal
