JOHN BEL EDWARDS' LAND THIEVING CHIEF OF STAFF

Governor- elect John Bel Edwards ran and won for governor based on the premise that he was a conservative Democrat. Very moving and inspirational campaign commercials indicated that Edwards was pro-life and lived by the West Point Honor Code.

Immediately after the results were tallied, however, Edwards began making cabinet appointments that raised doubts about the image that he had cultivated.

One of those appointments was former Senator Ben Nevers as Edwards' chief of staff.

For many years, residents in his district have been fighting a 3,200 acre reservoir project that would have forced residents in the district to sell their property.

In 2007, residents in the district appeared at the Washington Parish Council Chambers to voice their objections to the project. THE DEAD PELICAN has obtained video of the meeting in question, which appears below.

A resident at the meeting specifically mentions SB 639 by Senator Ben Nevers that would create the Washington Parish economic development district.

The person in the video notes that the bill would "create another political subdivision not accountable to the people in Washington Parish, but will wield enormous power of expropriation of private property."

In the video the bill is described as a "stealth bill designed to circumvent the voting process." According to the woman in the video, landowners were facing "expropriation without representation by a gang of seven appointed commissioners who may decide the fate of their property."

Jalon Beech, another resident in the video, confronts the council saying that "there's more people making money off the Washington Parish reservoir than anybody here in Washington Parish."

See the video in its entirety below.

At the time of this writing, it appears that Nevers' land-grabbing scheme has failed. This doesn't change the fact that it happened and should not be forgotten.
